Kris’s Journey
Kris first joined one of our BeYou group meet-ups several years ago when they were struggling with anxiety. The idea of reaching out to new people and forming friendships felt overwhelming, leaving them shy, isolated and unsure of how to connect with others or feel part of a group.
Many young people attending groups for the first time feel this way, and it’s completely normal. BeYou’s Youth Worker recognised that Kris was overwhelmed and took the time to build their trust, reassuring them that the groups were a positive and safe space where they could be themselves.
Through gentle conversations each week, the Youth Worker slowly got to know Kris, learning more about their interests, what they enjoyed doing at the weekend and what they felt passionate about. Over time, Kris opened up about their love of music, their talent for maths and how they enjoy expressing themselves by wearing funky shirts!
This gradual approach to building a relationship broke down barriers, created trust and helped Kris feel seen and valued.
Eventually, Kris was introduced to a small group of LGBTQ+ young people who also attended weekly sessions and shared similar interests. This new friendship group changed Kris’s life. For the first time, they had peers who truly understood what they were going through. These connections were pivotal in Kris’s development and helped them embrace their authentic self.
The group of friends now regularly spend time together outside of the BeYou groups, having fun and supporting one another through their individual challenges.
Today, Kris is a confident young person and a valued member of the weekly group. Their growth through being part of the BeYou Project has been remarkable. Each week, Kris now happily takes part in group activities, including games and playing pool. They also enjoy chatting to friends and staff about their life, particularly their current A-level studies and plans for the future.
The importance of inclusive spaces
By developing a culture of understanding where everyone is free to be who they are, we can ensure LGBTQ+ young people feel included, have positive mental health and a bright future. Becoming your authentic self isn’t always easy, but we’re here to help you navigate the journey with confidence and find a place where you truly belong.
We support LGBTQ+ children and young people aged 13-25 through group meet-ups and one-to-one support. We also provide support and advice for parents, carers and families.
